The sun was bidding us adieu when we arrived. In a far distance, a boat with lights all aglow languidly cruises by. Just about the picture-perfect tableau to end the day along Manila Bay with a cup of coffee, you would think.

But no.

This was the opening night of the 5th Philippine International Pyromusical Competition, and instead of sipping a cup of steaming coffee, my companions in this sealed-off VIP/Media area were busy finding the perfect spot to set up their tripods. Or were busy tweaking their camera settings. Or both.

The soft glow of dusk soon gave way to the enveloping darkness of night, as it always does. And the night sky became a canvass of exploding hues and colors.

It all made for a dream-like backdrop to the song that was playing in my mind – Don Mclean’s Vincent:

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds of violet haze

The song is of course a tribute to the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh whose well-known works include The Starry Night and Starry Night Over the Rhone

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I sure was reminded of these masterpieces that night as the Philippine’s Platinum Fireworks, Inc. and Australia’s Howard and Son’s Fireworks made deft masterstrokes on a vast canvas that was Manila Bay’s night sky.

You can still watch these mesmerizing and dazzling displays every Saturday until March 22, 2014 at the Seaside Boulevard, SM Mall of Asia! Tickets are priced at P100 (silver), P300 (gold), P500 (VIP) and P1,500 (Patron, inclusive of dinner).
